Scripture Text: Matthew 2:1-12
V-11 "And when they had come into the house. They saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense and myrrh."
Gifts for a King--What are you Giving?
This is the busiest time of the year. Travel is at its peek. Spending is at its peek. (Billions of dollars are spent for presents every year.) Being with family and friends is the norm.
Many think of Christmas in terms of what they are going to receive. Children are taught from infancy to look forward to Christmas. This is the time that they will be receiving many presents. Many adults are inclined to think the same way. Some of us dread the thought of having to go shopping. (Can I get a witness?)
Perhaps this is the time of the year that people have a spirit of sympathy. This is the time that people all over the world receive gifts sent to them by loved ones. Many will enjoy receiving these gifts because they have also shared in their giving.
Did you ever wonder where and when giving of Christmas gifts originated? Let's go back to the first Christmas and observe how it was celebrated.
I. God gave his Son.. "And thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins" (Matt. 1:21). Also see Luke 2:10-11; John 3:16; 2 Cor. 9:6; Romans 6:23.
II. The angels gave a song. . "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 1:13-14).
III. The shepherds gave a story.. "And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child" (Luke 2:17).
IV. The wise men gave of their substance. . "And when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh" (Matthew 2:11).
V. Mary gave submission.. "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word" (Luke 1:38).
VI. The Bethlehemites gave a stable. "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7).
Conclusion: What are you going to give Christ today? A song? You can. A testimony? You may. A gift? You should. A life? You ought.
