Memorial Day--A Time to Remember
Scripture Text: John 15:13(KJV)
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Romans 13:7 (NIV)
7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Tomorrow is the day when we honor all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. Freedom is a precious thing. There have been many wars fought. Many lives have been lost to pay the cost for freedom.
What do you think of when you think of Memorial Day - the beginning of summer vacation, barbecues in the back yard, family get-togethers? In most churches Memorial Day is ignored because it is not one of the Holy days on the church calendar. But I believe that it would be good for us to consider what Memorial Day really represents, for its very name calls us to remember. This Memorial Day gives us a chance to take a moment to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I encourage you to make this holiday more than just another three-day weekend. We can take many small actions to show our gratitude: say a prayer for our fallen heroes, take some time to visit with a widow, or lay flowers by a war memorial. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. We can begin to repay our lost service-members by not forgetting, and by remembering what they did and why they fought: for our state, for our nation, for our freedoms, and for future generations. I know I will never forget.
Memorial Day is a time to remember our war heroes. What does it take to be a true hero, a Christian Hero. Hebrews 11 provides us with a list of some of God's past heroes. They were ordinary people who were used by God.
Requirement 1: Believe in God's Word
Verse 6 "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
Requirement 2 Commitment to God's Will
Verses 13-16 "These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth."
Requirement 3 Devotion to God's Work.
Hebrews 12:1-2 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us"
