Scripture Text: Matthew 6:19-21
19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
This morning I want to awaken your spirits by asking you this question: "What has happened to God in America?"
I am really puzzled and perplexed by what I am seeing and hearing in a nation where a large number of people claim to be a Christian.
Being a Christian means that the individual has accepted Christ in their life and are trying to live as He has shown us through His life example. Yet as I look at what is going on in our nation, I find myself wondering how this can be true.
How can we, the enlightened ones, say and do some of the things we say and do "in the name of Jesus"?
It is almost as if Jesus is not saying anything and we are left to speak for Him with words that He may never have utilized or approved of.
Too often, we feel that we are listening what God is saying to us but we really hear only what we want to hear.
Point I. A Severe Warning about how we hear..
-God desires to speak to us. He desires to reveal His will to us, and to be actively involved in leading us.
Proverbs 8:34 (NIV)
Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway
Point II. Four Types of Hearers
1. Care-Less Hearers
-The message goes in one ear and out the other. They could care less what they hear.
- It is possible for us to hear with our physical ears and not hear with our ears of understanding.
2. Superficial Hearers
3. Carnal Hearers
4. Sincere Hearers
The deepest relationship is not determined by blood, but by hearts and minds meshed together. The person closest to God is the person who obeys God and takes His Word seriously.
