Scripture Text: I Corinthians 1:17-18
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God”.
The Power of the Blood and the Cross
Many churches have taken the central theme – Jesus and His Blood, and the central action – The Cross out of the church. We have preachers talking about I want you to be comfortable with what God has made you, instead of the confrontation of the cross. When a sermon about the cross is preached it causes a person to deal with the sin in their life. You cannot be comfortable with what you are until you deal with what you are doing.
If there is no relationship between you and the Prince of Peace, that giveth Peace--that passeth all understanding, how in the world can you be comfortable in your current condition when you have no peace. I’ m reminded of the bumper sticker that says “Know Jesus – Know Peace, No Jesus – No Peace”. That lets me to believe that comfort and happiness will come after there is a turning around, which is simply repentance.
When you try to take the blood and the cross out of the church, there’s no direction. There’s no way you can get to God. There’s no way you can be comfortable because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin, without the cross there is a gap between you and God.
That’s why the songwriter said “At the cross at the cross where I first saw the light and the burdens of my heart rolled away it was there by faith I received my sight and now I am happy all the day”.
3 things happen at the cross.
1. Sin dies at the cross.
2. Hell is defeated at the cross.
3. Heaven is delivered at the cross.
Point 1: Sin dies
When a person places their faith in the shed blood of Jesus and the cross, old things are passed away and behold all things become new. Their old habits, that old nature, that old way of thinking is changed.
Point 2: Hell is Defeated
Condemnation is the punishment of sin, but at the cross I died out to sin, I became a new creature by faith when I accepted what Jesus did on the cross. I was washed in His blood, the guilt of sin was removed from me, the price of my freedom was paid.
Point 3: Heaven is Delivered
Because the blood of Jesus and the cross the Kingdom of Heaven is available to all those that will accept the power of the blood and the cross.
Remember, when Jesus said it was finished and he hung His head and died, the veil in the Temple was rent from top to bottom. It exposed the Holy of Holies to everyone. When you and I accept by faith the blood of Jesus and the cross, the Holy of Holies, which is Heaven is delivered, we have access through the blood of Jesus to enter into the presence of God.
