Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10; Proverbs 27:17; 1 John 1:6-7
Scripture Text: Acts 2:41-47
41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
(The Fellowship of the Believers)
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Experiencing the Joy & Power of the Christian Life
Introduction: Losing weight (New Years Resolutions)
To actually weigh less versus just wanting to weigh less are 2 different things. I can’t just will myself to weigh less, although sometimes I try. When you step on the scale, do you often take a deep breath, hoping the air in your lungs acts like helium and produces a lower number on the scale.
You can try this, but I am here to tell you it doesn’t work!
So apparently and somewhat unfortunately, I am not going to weigh less unless I do something differently than I did last year. I can’t get up tomorrow and just think lighter and, wala, I am.
So, if I want to go from where I am now to 20-25 pounds lighter, some things in my life have to change. I have to either eat less or exercise more or some combination of those to produce weight loss in me. It is not just going to happen because I want it to.
Look at some things that were happening in the early church and take a look at what these Christians were doing so that we too might be able to experience the Joy and Power of the Christian life.
Devotion 1. They devoted themselves to the Apostles Teaching
What is that? Where can we find the Apostles teaching? In the Bible.
Acts 2:42 - They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…
Devotion 2. They devoted themselves to Fellowship.
If we want to experience the joy and power of the Christian life, we need to devote ourselves to Fellowship
Devotion 3. They devoted themselves to Breaking of Bread
Acts 2:42 talks about the breaking of bread. Some have thought this is solely a reference to communion, but I think it really means just eating together and is a further explaining of an aspect of fellowship.
Devotion 4. . They devoted themselves to Prayer
Acts 2:42 - “They devoted themselves to …prayer.”
We do not have the power to live well ourselves, but God has the power to live Joyfully and we need to be praying so that we experience this to His glory and honor.
Are you experiencing the Joy and Power of the Christian Life?
If not, then I want you to ask yourself, “are you” devoting yourself to Bible study, fellowship and prayer? You cannot experience the joy and power of the Christian life without being devoted to those things.
